Microsoft has announced that Copilot for VS Code is free.

I’m not talking about the crappy Copilot that comes with Bing. This is the code assistant plugin for VS Code. It used to require a paid subscription. Now anyone can use it!

These days as a full-time mom, I have less time to try stuff out. However, my husband is amazing and takes over on Saturdays so I have time to squat in a coffee shop like a college student while I work on fun Kaggle Playground Series machine learning competitions (no, I’m not competitive…yet…just having fun).

So far, my impression of the free VS Code Copilot plugin is positive. I like the inline chat function where I can ask a question or state an action I’d like it to take and it writes a code block that I can accept or ask for clarification. I only have experience using it in Python, though. Let me know in the comments below if you have experience with other languages and your initial impressions.

Go check it out for yourself!

https://code.visualstudio.com/blogs/2024/12/18/free-github-copilot

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/ide/copilot-free-plan?view=vs-2022

2025 is coming in hot.
